Volunteers from Christ Lutheran and other area congregations work on a Habitat Build.
Neighbor-to-Neighbor: Using a phone “hot line,” we receive requests and provide assistance to elderly and infirm church members in the forms of transportation, housework, and simple home maintenance. This allows elderly residents to remain independent and in their homes instead of assisted living.Contact the church office to volunteer or to request assistance.
Neighbor-to-Neighbor Ministry opportunities include (but aren't limited to):
- making phone calls or home visits
- performing light household tasks
- providing light home maintenance
- providing transportation to medical appointments or shopping
- doing light yard work
- offering respite care to provide a period of rest to a care-giver
Family Promise: Local congregations and volunteers provide temporary housing and meals for families with children. Family Promise works with four families at a time, providing full-time case management to assist the families in addressing and overcoming causes of homelessness and creating goals of employment, housing, education in their return to independence.
Social Ministries of Christ Lutheran Church
The Social Ministries team includes representatives from the various outreach ministries at Christ Lutheran. We meet monthly (first Wednesday at 7 PM) to review ministry challenges and accomplishments, plan upcoming events, and explore new ministry opportunities. These are some of the ministries we currently support:
Social Club: This ministry has been a part of Christ Lutheran Church for more than 30 years. Twice a month, adults with emotional and mental challenges are picked up in the church van from an area home for adults, brought to the church or another designated place and served a meal. Volunteers also assist the participants with an activity. (Bingo is a favorite!)
Habitat for Humanity: Working with Thrivent Financial and other area Lutheran congregations, we participate in Habitat Builds in our community, extending the arms of Christ to provide people with real homes.
Roanoke Area Ministries: Since 2020 Christ Lutheran members have faithfully provided bag lunches twice a month. RAM House is a day shelter serving area needy and homeless individuals and families.
Rescue Mission: A group assists in serving lunch the first Wednesday of every other month at the Rescue Mission, which serves the area homeless and people in need.
Lutheran Family Services: Foster children often move from home to home using garbage bags to store their personal effects. We donate new or like-new luggage to Lutheran Family Services for distribution to foster children in need.
Congregations in Action: Local churches provide assistance to our nearby elementary schools. We provide tutors, mentors, and healthful snacks for at-risk youth.St. Francis House: In addition to financial support, we also collect non-perishable food items in our food barrel located in the gathering area outside our sanctuary. Items donated are picked up by St. Francis House and are distributed to the needy in our community
